The 2012 Hvar Tuna Challenge: Kod Kapetana 206, Gariful 240

Coming from Manchester, I don't know a lot about tuna except that it comes in tins and is fairly tasty and not expensive. I don't think I had ever had a tuna steak until I came to Hvar, but now I am addicted. My only other experience with tuna prior to Hvar was in a supermarket in Hiroshima where I was trying to buy some familiar food, and the tuna pictures on the tin looked friendly and reminded me of home. It turned out to be cat food (and actually quite tasty).

A few days ago, the boys at Kod Kapetana posted pictures of perhaps their biggest ever tuna catch - a mere 206kg. I went along the other day to see how much tuna was left and was treated to a very fine tuna steak. One thing stuck in my head though, as I was eating - the Gariful tuna party.

I posted a blog this morning about the food presentation at Gariful which is, for me so far, the best on the island, as one would expect from Hvar's most exclusive restaurant. A few hours later I received news of another tuna catch - Kod Kapetana's 206kg had been more than matched by a 240kg whopper.

Gariful introduced the concept of the tuna party to Hvar seven years ago. To find out more, walk along the waterfront and look for the large fish which is twice the size of even this Englishman. Congratulations to the fishermen in both cases - it was quite a catch. To learn more about Hvar's fishermen, check out the video below.
