The Island of Hvar in 100 Pictures: 17. Pitve Tunnel

During my days of real estate, I had a fantastic house in Zavala on my books. No renovation required, great terraces, spectacular sea view, close to the beach - it had it all. A family from England had fallen in love with the property, and all I had to do was take them to the house, arrange for the contract and sit back and wait for a nice commission.

They never did buy.

"Oh my God, get me out of here. I am NOT going through that tunnel again." The reaction of the wife was unfortunate, as back then there was no other alternative except swimming from Zavala round Hvar Town and on to Jelsa.

Love it or loathe it, the Pitve Tunnel is unique, 1.4 km of crude tunnel connecting the south side via Pitve. They have taken the fun out it since this picture was taken, adding reflector lights to the side. Check it out at least once on your trip, it is one of the great undiscovered film sets of the world.
