The Rudine Grill Gets Its First Outing in 2012

I don't know what it is about Rudine - one of the least discovered places on the island - but it is one of my favourite places in the world, offering something unique to the island. It is not just that my best friend lives there, there is just something special about the atmosphere, the community feel among the neighbours, most of whom are not originally from the village. It is the kind of place you can just hang out in the garden, nod to anyone who passes and, within five minutes of arrival, feel totally included and immersed in village life. Language is not a barrier, and a glass of rakija helps smooth relations should it be a problem.

My partner in crime from London has lived here almost as long as me, and he is infinitely more practical. With an eye for detail and no compromise for quality, he has - for me - two of the best rentals on the island, one in Hvar Town and the village experience in Rudine. Check them out on his site or watch the slideshow of Rudine below.

But this post is not a sales pitch, but more to tell you about the wonderful grill in Mark's small but very productive garden. A cold beer and some sausages on the grill, trying the first home-made pickled onions of the year (delicious), while watching the butterflies hover over the various plants. Bird song in the background, a neighbour leisurely passing by, and another very sunny day, but sheltered by the grill.

Just a very pleasant afternoon. Rudine is magical - why not go and discover for yourself?
